I'll get to the family reunion thing at some point (it went well), but I want to talk about this now because it's awesome.

Today, [livejournal.com profile] chefmongoose and I went on Colin McEnroe's NPR show to talk about the furry fandom. The show, a whole lot of my art (eeeeeeeee!), and pictures of us being on the radio are available on the show's site, The Furries Among Us. We unfortunately ran out of time (that hour goes FAST) to talk about everything we wanted to talk about, but I think we made a lot of good points. Plus, I was assured by the mongoose that I sounded like I knew what I was doing, which is an excellent thing :)

And yes, I did draw both Chion Wolf (who goes by Wolfie -- how can I not draw her?) and Colin McEnroe as anthropomorphic animals...Chion got drawn as a wolf, of course, and I asked Colin and he said he'd like to be an otter. I'm hoping to get a high DPI scan of the sketch so I can color it.

So. Yeah. That's awesome.

I could not listen to it while it was on since their website (and linked stream) went down during that period. Furries may have broken their website.

I had actually brought radio down to store to see if I'd get lucky and be able to pick it up down here, but no dice. Its really dodgey about getting NPR here due to hills, so you have to be in just the right spot. So the neighbors got to watch me waving a radio around to see if I could get any reception. No dice. Best I got was something that sounded like Charlie Brown being sucked into the ocean.

HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS wah wah wah HIIIIIIIIIIISSSS wah wah wah wah? HIIIIIIISSS Wah wah wah!

Awesome! How did this happen? Were you nervous? It didn't sound like it. You did a great job.

[livejournal.com profile] chefmongoose got asked to be on the show, and he felt I was a decent representation of the fandom (sane, articulate, and available today at 1pm) and asked if I could tag along.

Oddly, I wasn't nervous at all -- the hosts were really fun, and completely comfortable with discussing the fandom as something other than "a bunch of freaks who hook-up in animal costumes."

And thanks! I hope that we were a good introduction for folks who've never heard of the furry fandom before. I'm using the show as an intro point for my mom, who I've never really explained the fandom to previously.

(How to explain the furry fandom to your parents: go on an NPR radio show, apparently.)

Wouldn't work for my family! They don't listen to NPR. Too "liberal." e_e

Fortunately for me, my family is a bunch of NPR-listening, tree-hugging, soy latte-drinking liberals (I had to get it from somewhere!). This is actually the best introduction I can think of.

...though, obviously I've been in the fandom for something like 14 years, I probably should have explained it sooner =p

I've had people ask me that before, actually ;)

I am more or less an exact half & half blend of my mom and dad -- my mom's an artist, my dad's a rocket scientist -- and it amazes folks when they hear how awesome my folks are. I sort of have to step back and go, "Well, really, I had to get the awesome from somewhere..."

That's really awesome! You've always struck me as someone who just "gets it", and can explain at least SOME of the nuances about furrydom to the mundanes among us. Very cool. :)

I'll have to listen to this show when things quiet down here at work. Can't wait to hear what all was said.

Hopefully you enjoy it, when you get a chance to listen! I was reassured by everyone that I sounded like I knew what I was doing, with what sounded like mild surprise that I was able to communicate my thoughts and opinions so clearly. 4 years of customer service in retail (not to mention being a dealer at furry conventions!) helped with that ;)

We had some...interesting callers that had to be explained to the host during the breaks (and I was VERY glad to have the head of Anthrocon registration sitting next to me to crush accusations with facts). Having a psychologist there was actually pretty helpful, because he backed us up on the introversion and autism-spectrum personalities that often find a home in the fandom.

I do wish we'd had more time! So did the hosts, actually. We barely scratched the surface!

Sounds like he might need to have you on again! They do sometimes do follow-up shows specifically because they ran out of time.

OT: I've been meaning to ask: The character in your icon here. Is she a Gungan?

Ha! No, she's a snail. It's easier to tell when you can see her shell (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/215976/).

Though her boyfriend is nerdy enough that I could totally make a joke about that in a comic...

Ohhhhh, okay! I think somewhere I knew that and had just forgotten. Cool!

I could see a comic where someone compares her to Jar Jar, her boyfriend gets angry and moves to defend her, and she thinks it's hilarious. :) (Or vice versa?)
